On October 14, 2015, NHTSA hosted a briefing on two new impaired driving assessment tools, the Computerized Assessment and Referral System (CARS) and the Impaired Driving Assessment (IDA). Experts from the Division on Addiction at Harvard affiliated Cambridge Health Alliance and the American Probation and Parole Association presented their risk-assessment tools and discussed factors that can predict the risk of impaired driving offenders reoffending. A Judge of the State of Michigan Sixth Circuit Court gave her perspective on the effect these tools could have on the criminal justice system and how it handles impaired-driving cases.
