NHTSA is taking its 5-Star Safety Ratings program, known as the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), into a new safety era and encouraging automakers to produce cars with better crash protection and new technology innovations that will save more lives. The agency plans to revolutionize the way it crash-tests cars and rates vehicles to promote an even higher level of safety. Significant changes include an additional crash test, new and more human-like crash test dummies, the inclusion of advanced crash-avoidance technologies as part of the new ratings system, and pedestrian protection.
On January 14, NHTSA held the first of two public hearings to provide the public with opportunities to present comments regarding the planned upgrade to NCAP. The first hearing was held in Detroit, Michigan. The second hearing will be held at the U.S. DOT Headquarters in Washington, DC, on January 29, 2016.
